I love Schuberg's if only because it's such a rustic, traditionally American establishment in the heart of Big Rapids. It was one of my favourite after work spots, with decently priced beers and a cozy atmosphere. But let's start with the negatives: There are a few members of the waitstaff that have a bit of an attitude problem - just rude and not attentive in the least right up until the check arrives, when they try to make nice. Fortunately this doesn't apply to everyone. The bar is pretty standard - nothing too fancy so don't expect to be able to order crazy cocktails (as I attempted). Things can get pretty crowded, especially on the weekends, so you may have to cram in at the bar to eat instead of getting a table or booth. As for the food, there are a few items on the menu that I would avoid. The coconut shrimp tend to be over-breaded and way to crispy. Same with the fried grouper plate - the menu says "lightly breaded" but that is a massive understatement. I also think it's really strange that you have to pay so much extra to get pub fries with your meal instead of chips, though I must admit they have some truly amazing pub fries so I upgraded every time. Now for the pros, my favourite part of any review! Like I said, the atmosphere is really cozy and I love that so many locals frequent the place. I've never had an issue with rowdy college kids, which is really a plus in a college town like Big Rapids. I also love the live jazz they have on weekends - none of the acts are super-pro but they're still very good and will have a drink with you between sets. Their spinach-artichoke dip is also heavenly. The portions are huge and the way they fry the pita bread gives it that extra little "oomph" that sends it on its way to being a truly memorable dish. Often times my husband and I would stop there just to get two orders of the dip! They also have amazing burgers (my personal choice would be the mushroom swiss). The Egg-cellent Schu is also great with the fried egg on top. Just be sure everything you order is on there - there was one mishap where we ordered the avocado club and there was no avocado on it... Luckily it was quickly corrected with a huge helping of freshly sliced 'cado from the kitchen! All in all, I love the hometown feel of Schuberg's and the quality of food is overall great. OH - and the lobster bisque (offered every Tuesday) is INSANE. But call ahead if you want to go just for the bisque; it tends to run out by 7. Once you've tasted it, you'll know why!

Visiting my home state for work and to see family. Caught one tiny walleye last weekend - too small to keep. Walleye on the menu!Nice draft beer selection. Food good, tad salty for my taste, but tasty. Nice asparagus - cooked on grill/Smokey flavor. Great service.

Delicious food. Haven't had a bad meal here yet! Definite must visit if you're in Big Rapids. Excellent atmosphere, reasonable prices. Pub Fries are worth the little bit extra too!

I am a regular here and the food is always great. The Walleye is a good choice. The Flat Iron Steak Plate is what I had tonight. This was an excellent choice two times now. The wait staff is great and it is a nostalgic tradition from greater days gone by.

Best burger around! I work close by, and have designated the last day of the workweek as Schuberg Friday. The bacon burger with pepper jack rocks, and the PJ&J is awesome. Great place, great staff.

My favorite restaurant in town. Their "Schuburgers" are some of the best I've ever tasted. Fries too.

I used to live out of town and only come to Big Rapids once a year to visit my grandparents. I had ventured into Schuberg's and left because the air was stuffy and it smelled like fried food. Now that I live around here, of course I ended up at Schuberg's for dinner a couple of times in the last month. It's actually my favorite spot in town so far. I think the smell was a one-time thing. The food is wonderful and you absolutely cannot beat it for the price. I've tried a few sandwiches and they've all been delicious. The sweet potato fries are some of the best I've had. They have good beers on tap and the service has been flawless when we have dinner inside instead of doing take-out. They do a good job with the take-out also. I had an awesome white bean and sausage soup there that I'm going to try hard to replicate at home because I want to eat it every day. This place is definitely the place to go in Big Rapids. It's inexpensive and you'll be supporting a place that has been a part of this town for decades.

Best burgers in Big Rapids. Seriously get a burger...I always judge the people that don't. They are really missing out. I just went to Big Rapids this last weekend for homecoming and everyone wanted to go to Schubergs. It is just one of those places you have to stop at when you are in town. I usually get the blue schuburger. Its got blue cheese on it, clearly. It is worth it to upgrade to the fries, this time I got onion rings and they were pretty good. The whole place is warm and cozy but can get crowded fast so plan on waiting for a bit. Don't worry, it is worth the wait. You can sit at the bar too and while it isn't as good for a group you do get awesome service since you are literally eye to eye with the waitstaff. There is parking on the street out front or in the lot in the back and you can come in the front or back.

We love Schuberg's! Always try to stop in when we're in the area. Closed Sunday's which is a bummer since most travel is on a weekend. Anyways, this particular Sat evening did have some people waiting to get seated. Since we saw people leaving, we decided to stay but there's no written system of whose next. There should be, especially since there are two entrances. We started with a couple beers and then chose the Walleye with white cheddar mashed potatoes and Salmon with a baked potato. A side salad was an additional $3 and very plentiful with a variety of vegetables. Both entrees were very good. I was concerned the bourbon sauce would be too spicy but it wasn't, just the right amount of flavor. The service was decent and the food came quickly but an ask for another drink should have came earlier than it did! Overall, we love Schuberg's and they always seem busy, so why don't they hire more staff to move things along?

Absolutely delicious! Went there whilst visiting a friend in Big Rapids, and will definitely be back. I highly recommend paying extra to have the fries instead of chips. The service is quick & friendly, and the prices are decent. I had the Grilled Chicken Ranch Melt with Bacon & Fries. Definitely fills you up!

Don't even think about going to/through/around/near Big Rapids without visiting Schuberg's Bar downtown. Whenever I think about Schuberg's Bar, it just gets me all excited, like a dog with a new toy, and make my stomach sing with joy as it knows that it will be treated with a fantastic tasting meal. I can say that Schuberg's Bar has food and an atmosphere that I continue to search for as my life progresses. It's like going home to Mom when she cooks your favorite dish, although you may try to find places that duplicate that special dish, you never find it; that special dish for me at Schuberg's is the French Dip. It is by far the best French Dip I have ever had, and probably will ever have. The fries they have are beyond delicious, and the perfect greasy compliment to a fantastic meal. Just thinking about it now makes me want to drive two and a half hours just to dive into a delicious sandwich right now, and perhaps I will.

My wife was going to Ferris State in Big Rapids ,and I was visiting on Saturday and we were searching a place to eat that was not a chain. We found this unassuming bar that happened to have a grill tacked on it. Little did we know that six years ago that we had found a place that we would still drive an hour from Grand Rapids in order to partake. We always get burgers. Mushroom & Swiss is epic with the beer battered pub fries paired with a nice brew (Guinness for me) is a great choice. If you go at the dinner hour be prepared to wait for a table, but it is worth it. Schuberg's has a real atmosphere. You can hear a local band or catch a game here. Anytime I can get away with going here. I will with my lovey wife of course. You really owe it to your self if your in the neighborhood.

This place is always great. The draft beer is always nice and cold and very fresh, unlike alot of places in town. I am not usually one to vary my order but here I tried all different things and was pleased with everything I got. Prices are not bad and service is always friendly. It gets you away from the college scene that suffocates this town. Definitly a nice bar to go to.

This is it, you can not go to Big Rapids without getting a schubuger, fries, and a PBR to wash it down. Some of the best burgers in the state, with a quaint atmosphere. You must go ghere if you are in town. thay also have a fantastic beer selection.

Seeing how this is one of the only decent places to eat while in town I still look forward to coming here. All the food on the menu is actually good. I always go with the big schu! half pound burger with three slices of cheese. If that doesn't fill you up there's free popcorn and peanuts to Finnish you off. You're bound to have a full tummy and bump into someone you know!

When you eat at Schuberg's you really should have a burger. The other menu items are quite good but you'll be missing out if you don't have a burger.

I've been coming to Big Rapids for years. My trips are for business lasting for 2 days to sometimes over a week. This will be the first time I will return to a place to eat out of desire rather than necessity. I had a fantastic Philly Cheese and beer so cold......!!!

What a wonderful place to eat. At first I was apprehensive being gluten free, but the place was packed with only two stools at the bar -- right in front of the grill -- and my eyes laid on all those wonderful burgers and it was on. I had a half pound burger cooked medium because it was going on a bed of lettuce with 3 slices of cheddar, bacon, tomato, and pickles. Am I eating with my eyes? It was so good! I cleaned my plate. And the service was excellent even with as busy as thru were! Don't miss this place if you're cruising through town.

Passing through on way north. Picked based on Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. Well staffed and attentive service despite near capacity. Lots of cool burger options. Food prepped in front of you behind the bar by two chefs. I'd go off path to visit again.

Seafood chowder is fantastic! Creamy, full of delicious tender seafood and potatoes. Only served on Fridays. Glad I was here on a Friday. Also had the Shu-burger. Classic chargrilled perfection. A place that's been around since 1933 is certainly worth the stop!

Best meal in Michigan as far as I'm concerned. I always have the original Schuberger on a pretzel bun with beer battered fries and a Pabst Blue Ribbon. As an FSU alum who lives in California, I look forward to any opportunity to make a trip up to Schubergs when I'm in the state. You will be greeted by Dana who is always busting her butt and making sure every customer is happy! Be sure to try the chili in the winter time as well. You won't be disappointed.

Don't bother unless you are a local. The staff does not care about tourists. We waited five minutes in the entryway and even though staff were not busy and some walked past us, nobody seated us. So we assumed that this was a "seat-yourself" place and found an empty table and sat down. Another 10 minutes passed, more staff walked by, but NOBODY ever bothered to greet us. We left. This is the worst reception we've EVER had at any restaurant.

My husband, our friend and I were in town on our way to see the Blue Angels on the weekend of Sept. 5/6. Country Inn & Suites suggested some restaurants & we chose Schuberg's. OMG!!! We were served the best flat iron steaks we've ever had! We are still talking about that meal! We're from the Chicago area where there is a great selection of restaurants to choose from, but that meal was phenomenal! I actually just bought some flat iron steaks & am hoping to speak with Schuberg's chef in hopes he will explain to me how he cooked them. He would have been working Sept. 5th in the evening. The waitress we had was very friendly, as well. The whole experience was great. If we're ever around that area again, we will definitely stop in!

New to area and just wanted a quick bite. Awesome burgers. Very nice staff but always very busy so you have to be patient. Well worth returning. Oh...and all those beers on tap!!

If you're in the mood for a burger in Big Rapids you need to come to Schubergs!! Friendly staff but if you come during lunch it's always busy and the staff aren't very good at multitasking. I've spent many lunches waiting on food with empty drinks. You can't go if your on a time crunch!

Great burger and spinach and artichoke dip. Very cool small town bar vibe. I'm not in Big Rapids often, but I would definitely return if I was here.

We have always had good experiences at this establishment, until today. We sat at the bar, and as we were finishing up our dinner, the owner walked up behind the bar and picked up about 8 beer mugs and determined none of them were clean to his satisfaction. He held them up in the air and wrinkled up his nose in front of several customers. He picked up one final glass and said "got a winner". This all occurred about one foot in front of our faces. My husband and I each had about a half glass of beer left, and needless to say, we did not want to finish it. After informing our waitress, she apologized, but nothing further was done. No comp for the unfinished beer. Disappointing! We will not be dining or drinking here again.

A great local bar with excellent food and fast, friendly service. A good selection of draught beers and an array of craft burgers pairs well with the friendly staff and charisma of the space. They have award winning chilli, great chowder, and free popcorn and peanuts! The dinner menu also features steak, salmon, and heirloom potatoes. Sit at the bar and chat with the cooks and servers for the best experience.

When craving a burger Schuberg's is on the top of my list. This gem is hidden in the historic streets of Big Rapids. So when visiting Ferris do not fall into the temptation of crossing the road to eat from the chains. You deserve better, and the menu has an item for every taste preference. I grabbed the cowboy burger this time with an upgrade to steak fries. I never regret this decision. If you fancy the sweet potato fries Schuberg's will give Gypsy Nickel (another local bar) a run for its money. For the first 100 feet, where it will then decisively proceed to lap it repeatedly. I am sorry but the Nickel will always come up short (except on drink prices). For someone who frequently ate my way around Big Rapids this is the restaurant I can not pass up when visiting.

This place has been here a long time. I usually get a burger but I need to get here on a Friday night to get the home made Clam chowder only available Friday night. Everything I've had has been really good and it's definitely not chain food.

I was by myself for lunch so I thought I'd this place based on the Yelp reviews. And the reviews were right on. Since I was flying solo I sat at the bar. I had the classic burger with Swiss cheese. The cheese was melted when the burger arrived, a sign that the cook knew how to cook a burger. The fries were excellent! The classic is a regular size burger so order the larger one if you like a bigger burger. Which is what I should of done. Service was good considering I was there during the lunch hour.
